About the organization:
‘Reprieve’ is an organisation comprised of human rights defenders who provide free legal and investigative support to some of the world’s most vulnerable people: those facing execution, torture, imprisonment, counter-terrorism abuses, assassination and secret prisons. ‘Reprieve’ focus on assistance rather than direct representation, as they work in many jurisdictions and it is difficult to have lawyers who practice in all jurisdictions. This approach allows Reprieve to spread themselves more and help a greater number of people.
Volunteering and what it entails:
Volunteering at Reprieve’s London office does not solely involve administrative tasks. It involves helping managing client case-files, researching and investigating, taking minutes and attending meetings. The organization prefers its volunteers to work 2-3 days per week (from 9-5pm). However, as it is aware that students are busy with their academics, students can mention in the application form which times, days and numbers of hours are best suitable to showcase their individual availability. Those who can do 1 day per week can also mention this preference. ‘Reprieve’ also value those with proficiency in the Urdu and Arabic languages, in both written and spoken capabilities.
This is an extremely rewarding opportunity for those students interested in gaining a hands-on experience in human rights-related matters – whether you choose to pursue a career in this field or not. You will undoubtedly gain a well-rounded experience in this well-managed program, as it comprises of 37 staff members alongside about 15 volunteers on the volunteering program.
These can be found on https://www.reprieve.org.uk/about/volunteer-for-reprieve/becoming-a-reprieve-volunteer-in-london/. The application process consists of filling in the application form and submitting a CValongside this. You will also state which volunteer position you are interested in applying for, and can submit the same application for each one if you prefer. These should be sent to Esther Dummett at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The deadline for submitting these applications is by Wednesday, November 8 2017. As the deadline is today, we are working to potentially extend the deadline to Friday, November 10 2017. In the meantime, please do try to submit your applications as soon as possible as there is no guarantee of a deadline extension.
